CrowdStrike Update Bricking Windows Computers

Update Bricks Windows 10 Computers

BSOD Issue Linked to Bad Update

An update to a product from infosec vendor CrowdStrike is bricking computers running Windows. The Register has found numerous accounts of Windows 10 users experiencing Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors after installing the update. The issue doesn't seem linked to any hacks; merely a bad update could be to blame.

Brody Nisbet, CrowdStrike's Director of Threat Hunting, has confirmed that the issue is linked to the CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor component. The company is currently working on a fix, but in the meantime, users have been advised to uninstall the update.

How to Fix the CrowdStrike Windows BSOD Issue

Fortunately, CrowdStrike has since announced that it has identified the update causing the issue. To fix the BSOD issue, users should:

  1. Boot into safe mode on their Windows machine.
  2. Uninstall the CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor component.
  3. Restart their computer.

CrowdStrike has also released a tool that can be used to fix the issue without having to boot into safe mode. More information about the tool can be found on the CrowdStrike website.

I have contacted CrowdStrike and Microsoft for a comment and will update this article when the firms reply.
